As the garden center takes a seasonal pause, December is the perfect time to reflect on the beauty of your outdoor space and prepare for the promise of spring. While the cold months may seem dormant, they are a critical time for your landscape’s health. Here are some tips to ensure your garden is ready for a restful winter and a vibrant awakening come spring.

 1. Protect Your Plants

Many plants benefit from a layer of mulch to insulate their roots during freezing temperatures. Spread a fresh layer of mulch around trees, shrubs, and perennials to keep them cozy through the winter.

 2. Give Wildlife a Helping Hand

Winter can be challenging for local wildlife. Consider adding bird feeders to your yard and keeping a water source available. It’s a simple way to support nature while adding life to your landscape during the colder months.

3. Plan Ahead for Spring

Winter is a wonderful time to dream about the possibilities for your garden. Start researching plants, landscaping designs, or outdoor projects you’d like to tackle next year. Take notes and sketch out your ideas to make spring planting more organized and enjoyable.

 4. Care for Your Lawn and Tools

Don’t forget about your lawn! Remove any debris or heavy snow buildup to avoid damage to the grass. This is also the time to clean and store your gardening tools, ensuring they’re ready for action when the ground thaws.

5. Celebrate Nature Indoors

Bring the outdoors inside with natural holiday decorations. Use pinecones, evergreen branches, or dried flowers to create festive centerpieces or wreaths. It’s a great way to keep your connection to nature alive during the colder months.

Even though the garden center is closed for the season, your garden is still hard at work beneath the surface. These small steps can make a big difference in keeping your landscape healthy and thriving.

As we reflect on this past year, we want to thank our community for your support and enthusiasm for all things green and growing. From all of us at Ward Landscapes and Garden Center, we wish you a joyful holiday season and look forward to blooming with you in the spring!

Stay tuned for updates and inspiration—we’ll see you in 2025!
